VIRGINIA BEACH, May, 2009 -
The Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) is happy to welcome Gatorade as
the official beverage sponsor of the ESA surf series. As part of the
new agreement, Gatorade will support ESA surf events, including
Easterns – ESA’s championship event, happening in September in Cape
Hatteras, NC.
“The ESA provides immense support to amateur east
coast surfers and is dedicated to the growth and progression of surfing
on a local, grassroots level,” said Kenny Mitchell, action sports team
manager with Gatorade.
Gatorade’s sponsorship reflects the brand’s focus to provide support to
amateur, grassroots and local-level events, and also fits with the
product’s essential purpose – providing optimal hydration, so athletes
can perform at their best, for longer.
“Surfers
don’t have immediate access to fluids while they’re on the water,” said
Debbie Hodges, Executive Director of the Eastern Surfing Association.
“Factor in hot temperatures, the sun, saltwater, and physical exertion
while on the water and it makes sense for Gatorade to be involved with
surfing.”
With over 150 competitions each year from Maine down
to the Caribbean, the ESA is the largest amateur surfing competition
series in the world, and provides the opportunity for amateur east
coast surfers to qualify for the USA Surfing Championships and the U.S.
National Surf Team.
