Cambo’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage ready for lift-off

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 October, 2009 : - - Maroubra, NSW -- Professional surfer Michael Campbell is putting a spin on the traditional surfing contest with his Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage coming to Port Macquarie this weekend.

Cambo’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage provides an innovative and fresh approach to the traditional junior surfing competition in an effort to unearth the new wave of Australian surfing talent. Campbell, who is currently ranked 19th on the ASP World Tour, is excited to get amongst the local kids. “It’s such a great initiative from Ocean & Earth to bring together the kids,” said the Port Macquarie native.

“I can’t wait to see them get out there and tear the place apart – they inspire me to surf so much better.” Seeing the best surfers under 16 years from the far north, north and mid north regions, living between Hawks Nest and South Ballina, the talent on show will be of the highest order.

Unlike other surfing competitions, Cambo’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage will allow competitors (16 years and under) to surf three heats each without elimination instead of the traditional cutthroat format. “Surfing is about fun and this format definitely encourages the kids to focus on having fun with their surfing as opposed to just results,” Campbell added.

Headlining the massive talent pool will be local standout Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW) who will doing battle in the blue ribbon under 16 years division, whilst Jack Germain (Port Macquarie, NSW) will be looking to continue his dominance of the 13 years.

Whilst future superstar’s Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) and Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie, NSW) will be the one’s to watch in the under 16 girls division. Unlike the run of the mill surfing competition, each surfer’s two highest scoring rides from each heat will be added together, along with bonus points awarded according to the position the competitor finishes in each heat.

The six best-placed surfers in the each division will progress to their division final. The event, which is the one of six Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage events being staged throughout the year, will act as a qualifying event to the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Cronulla in December.

There will also be a host of beach activities and challenges with great prizes being handed out. For more information be sure to log onto surfingnsw.com.au. Cambo’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage is proudly supported by Ocean and Earth, Vodafone and Surfing NSW.
